My friends at Santa Barbara Adventure Company reached out with an amazing opportunity to visit the island and check out their Adventures Sea Cave Kayaking Tour. I’ve been kayaking a few times, but never on the Channel Islands, and have never explored sea caves.
Yosemite Backcountry: A Quick Overnight on the Pohono Trail
“I’m so glad you mentioned Crocker Point, most people skip that one,” said the ranger issuing my wilderness permit. She was right, days after Memorial Day and I enjoyed Crocker Point to myself. The Pohono Trail: Glacier Point to Dewey Point was the trail I chose for my second backpacking trip that week. This is my story for a quick overnighter on the Pohono Trail last month.

Winter Backpacking in Joshua Tree: Stubbe Springs Loop and Fan Canyon
In late December, I embarked on a solo backpacking trip in Joshua Tree National Park, tackling the 12-mile Stubbe Springs Loop trail. Although carrying a heavy pack with limited water, the well-maintained trail offered diverse desert views. The detour to Fan Canyon was a highlight not to be missed. The experience was a fitting end to the year.
Exploring Colorado National Parks: The Great Sand Dunes
After completing the Colorado Trail, I explored the Great Sand Dunes, home to North America’s tallest sand dune at 750 feet. Despite a short visit, I plan to return for sunrise. Nearby Zapata Falls Campground offers convenient camping. The park offers activities like sandboarding, hiking, and stargazing, best enjoyed in spring or fall. Remember water, sunscreen, and proper attire.

Visiting the Saguaros in a Cabana Van
As silly as it may sound, I did in fact drive over 500 miles to see the Saguaros in Tucson, Arizona. Springtime in the desert is the best time to explore, and even though temperatures stayed just below 100°, this Cali girl remains grateful for all of the amenities that come with the Cabana Van.
