Backcountry camping (aka backpacking) is a great experience. It lets you connect with nature. It challenges you and lets you explore new places. Whether you are planning your first backpacking trip or your third thru-hike, you need the right navigation tools. They can make a big difference in your journey. In this article, we’ll discuss a selection of essential navigation tools. We’ll also cover the apps you should have before starting your backcountry journey.
Gaia GPS
My personal favorite. Gaia GPS is a top-rated navigation app for backpackers, offering detailed topographic maps, route planning, and offline map access. The app allows you to download maps for offline use. This ensures you stay on course even when you’re out of cellular range. With features like way point marking and tracking, Gaia GPS is a great tool for navigating various terrains. I personally enjoy having the ability to create and save routes before my trip!
AllTrails
Best budget friendly app. AllTrails is a complete app. It provides a wide range of trail maps. It offers reviews and photos shared by a community of outdoor enthusiasts. The app helps you discover new trails, plan your route, and track your progress in real-time. AllTrails is an excellent resource for finding trails suitable for your skill level and preferences.
FarOut (formerly Guthook)
A personal favorite for thru-hikes. The FarOut app provides detailed trail guides with water sources, campsites, resupply points, and offline maps. It is a popular navigation app specifically designed for long-distance outdoor adventures like backpacking, hiking, and biking. I specifically like being able to add comments and check for most recent comments from recent hikers.
