10 Things to Know for Winter Camping
- Dress in Layers: Winter weather can be unpredicitble, wearing layers allows you to adjust to the changing temperatures. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add insulating layers like fleece or wool, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer layer.
- Choose the Right Gear: Investing in the right gear will surely make your trip more enjoyable. Here’s a few things to consider: a high-quality, cold-weather sleeping bag, a good insulating sleeping pad, and a sturdy, wind-resistant tent.
- Stay Dry: Moisture is your enemy in cold weather. It’s important to stay as dry as possible. Wear waterproof boots and clothing.
- Choose Your Campsite Wisely: Look for a sheltered spot away from strong winds, potential avalanche zones, and dead trees.
- Protect Your Extremities: Wear warm hats, gloves, and socks to keep your head, hands, and feet warm.
- Learn Winter Survival Skills: Know how to build a fire, signal for help, and navigate in low visibility conditions. Carry a GPS, a physical map, or track your hike to avoid getting lost.
- Stay Hydrated: Even though you may not feel thirsty, it’s important to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
- Check the Weather Forecast: Monitor the weather closely and be prepared to adjust your plans if necessary. Always have a plan B.
- Plan Your Meals: High-calorie, energy-dense foods like nuts, dried fruits, and energy bars are ideal for winter camping.
- Pack Extra: Bring extra layers of clothing, food, water, and fuel in case of emergencies or unexpected weather changes.
Many of these may seem like common sense, but it’s important to know and understand that winter conditions can change at any moment. Be prepared, stay aware, and always set out with the intention of turning around if conditions are no longer favorable.
