I spent some time exporing the colorful state after completing the Colorado Trail and was able to check off a few new national parks I hadn’t been to. The Great Sand Dunes is home to the tallest sand dune in North America, some reaching up to 750 feet! It would of been smart of me to attempt this hike, but with a short day ahead I simply wandered around the dunes with no itinerary in mind.
By the time I arrived, there was about an hour left before sunset. As much as I wanted to stick around to witness this amazing feat, I had plans to camp at Zapata Falls Campground nearby and wasn’t too sure of the drive in, so I wanted to make it to camp before it got too dark. Besides, I’d be back early the next morning, hopefully to catch sunrise!
Zapata Falls Campground is loacted 9-miles from the Great Sand Dunes National Park and is a great camping option outside of the park. Advance reservations are required and can be made here.
