As a solo female backpacker, there are few things more comforting than finding gear that not only meets but exceeds expectations. The Enigma down quilt from Enlightened Equipment is lightweight, warm, and has been my go-to sleeping quilt for the past 4 years. Let me share with you my experience with the Enigma, and why this has been a game-changer for my backpacking adventures.

Why Enlightened Equipment?

Enlightened Equipment offers a wide range of sleeping quilts, and apparel that is not only lightweight, and functional, but provide the option to fully customize- which is one of the many reasons why I love E.E. When I purchased my quilt, I changed my mind at the very last minute between two styles and I must say the excellent customer service is another one of the many reasons why I continue to support the brand.

Quilt vs. Sleeping bag

Making the switch from a traditional sleeping bag to a sleeping quilt was probably one of the biggest changes I’ve made since I started backpacking nearly 8 years ago. And, ever since making the change- I don’t see myself ever going back. As a side sleeper, I love having the ability to comfortably roll around in my quilt. Here are a few comparisons:

✨ A sleeping bag is often heavy, bulky, and doesn’t pack down very small.

✨ A down sleeping quilt weighs ounces, is extra warm, and packs down well.

✨ A sleeping bag has a fixed hood (mummy bag), whereas a sleeping quilt can be used as a blanket.

Enigma 0° Down Sleeping Quilt Product Review

It has been 4 years since I purchased my Enigma 0° quilt, and after a few thru-hikes and several backpacking trips, we’re a little overdue for a gear review…

What do I love about the Enigma?

My sleeping quilt is orange. Is that my favorite part of the quilt? Probably. But I also enjoy being able to fully compress it down, and still be able to keep me warm. I went with 0° because as a cold sleeper, I figured I could always untuck myself, and open the back to allow ventilation and cool myself down rather than bulk layer in hopes of getting warm.

I especially like having a sewn-closed foot box, think the hybrid version of a traditional sleeping bag. the Enigma features a zipper-less design containing clips to close the back, so for that reason, the Enigma cannot truly form into a blanket.

With 4 different sizes, 6 different temperature ratings,3 (in stock), and 17 (custom) colors to choose from- I am certain there is a down quilt option for you at Enlightened Equipment.
